What is cell and gene therapy?

Cell and gene therapy is a new, exciting field of medicine with the potential to help people with both rare and common diseases. Treatment is highly targeted to modify a gene, or genes, in the body’s cells to treat, prevent or potentially cure disease.

Gene therapy uses genetic material, such as DNA and RNA, to treat, prevent or even cure disease by modifying a specific gene in the body that may be faulty.

Gene therapy has been researched by scientists for over 50 years with new treatments being approved by the FDA every year.

Gene therapies are available for a variety of conditions, including retinal dystrophy, hemophilia A and B, spinal muscular atrophy, Duchenne muscular dystrophy and certain forms of bladder cancer.

Treatment for more conditions are on the horizon as researchers continue their promising work in the field.

Cell-based gene therapy combines the elements of cell therapy and gene therapy by using a patient’s own cells (autologous) or cells from a healthy donor (allogeneic) that are genetically modified before infusion into the patient to treat, prevent or cure disease.

Autologous

Autologous cell-based gene therapies are currently used for several forms of blood cancers and are being researched for solid tumor cancers. These therapies are available via a healthcare provider due to the complexity of cell collection and delivery.

Allogeneic

Allogeneic cell-based gene therapies, commonly called off-the-shelf therapies, are being researched and developed for several diseases, including cancer and autoimmune conditions. In the future, when FDA approved, these will be available via Specialty Pharmacy.

The American Society of Gene and Cell Therapy has more information on how clinical trials work, including the steps necessary to explore cell-based gene therapy for yourself or a loved one.
