Dermatological conditions

How CenterWell Specialty Pharmacy® can help

Millions of people live with dermatological conditions. The 2 most common conditions are psoriasis and atopic dermatitis. These conditions can cause disruptions in day-to-day life, but symptoms can be reduced or even eliminated.

What are dermatological conditions?

Dermatological conditions affect the skin. There are many skin conditions that range in severity from minor cosmetic concerns to more serious medical conditions. All dermatological conditions negatively impact the skin’s ability to perform its function.

If you are living with a dermatological condition, you can improve your quality of life by following your healthcare team’s treatment and medication plan.

Psoriasis¹

Psoriasis is an autoimmune disease that causes raised, scaly patches to appear on the skin, often after exposure to factors called "triggers." Psoriasis triggers include stress, infection, certain medications and skin injuries.

Normally, skin cells mature and shed about every 28 days. With psoriasis, the immune system sends faulty signals that speed up the skin-cell growth cycle. The body can't shed the skin cells fast enough and scaly patches called lesions form on the skin's surface.

Your care team may use the Psoriasis Area Severity and Index (PASI) to measure the severity of your psoriasis. The PASI determines if you're getting better or worse on your present medication or if a change is needed.

Atopic dermatitis²

Atopic dermatitis—often called eczema—makes your skin itchy and red. With repeated scratching, the skin can swell.

Eventually, the skin will appear coarse and thick. Atopic dermatitis is the most common form of eczema and can result from immune, genetic or environmental factors. It is chronic and tends to flare up during allergy or flu season.

Atopic dermatitis can interfere with sleep, work and overall daily function, and it can take a toll on a person's well-being and self-confidence. Still, it’s a common condition, and extremely treatable.

Because psoriasis and atopic dermatitis are chronic and unpredictable, they can be a challenge to treat.

Treatment options may depend on the severity of your condition. Care usually begins with topical treatments, wet wraps or phototherapy. If those are unsuccessful, some prescribers will recommend moving to an oral or injectable treatment.

CenterWell Specialty Pharmacy offers medications to treat both types of skin conditions, as directed by your prescriber.
