HIV and AIDS

How CenterWell Specialty Pharmacy® can help

The human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) and acquired immunodeficiency virus (AIDS) are chronic—but manageable—health conditions of the body’s immune system. While a diagnosis is alarming, it’s important to know that you can live a long, healthy life by following your healthcare team’s treatment and medication plan.

What is HIV and AIDS?¹

HIV weakens the immune system by destroying white blood cells (CD4 cells) that fight disease and infection. Once inside the body, HIV takes over healthy cells, makes copies of itself and continues to attack the body’s immune system.

If left untreated, the immune system could become too weak and may not be able to fight off infections. Over time, HIV becomes AIDS—the most advanced stage of the disease.

HIV can only be spread through blood, breast milk, semen and vaginal fluids.

There is currently no cure for HIV, but antiretroviral therapy (ART) can be used to stop the virus from making copies of itself. Although ART doesn’t cure the infection, it helps the immune system to recover.² There’s also 3 important things you can do to help your treatment plan:

Get regular checkups and lab results

Seeing your doctor regularly is necessary to monitor your response to treatment.

Make healthy lifestyle choices

Eating a healthy diet, exercising regularly and getting enough sleep can make it easier to manage HIV.

Take medications as prescribed

HIV medications should be taken at the same time and dosage determined by your prescriber.

Taking HIV medications correctly is a major factor in your treatment plan. CenterWell Specialty Pharmacy offers medications to treat HIV and AIDS, as directed by your prescriber.
