Multiple myeloma

How CenterWell Specialty Pharmacy® can help

Multiple myeloma—also called Kahler’s disease—is a cancer of the plasma cells. When faced with a diagnosis, it’s normal to feel lost or uncertain. Learn more about multiple myeloma and what we can do to support you on the road ahead.

What is multiple myeloma?¹

Multiple myeloma is a cancer that forms in the plasma cell, a type of white blood cell found in bone marrow. It is considered a rare form of cancer and typically occurs after age 65. Men are slightly more at risk than women.

Multiple myeloma starts when plasma cells become cancerous and grow out of control. Instead of creating helpful antibodies, the cancer cells produce abnormal proteins, leading to health complications and making fighting infection harder.

Early detection of multiple myeloma can lead to a better outcome. The most common signs and symptoms include:²

  • Bone pain, especially in the spine or chest
  • Constipation
  • Excessive thirst
  • Fatigue
  • Frequent infections
  • Loss of appetite
  • Mental fogginess or confusion
  • Nausea
  • Weakness or numbness in your legs
  • Weight loss

Multiple myeloma can be treated by using a combination of therapies and medications. CenterWell Specialty Pharmacy offers medications to treat multiple myeloma, as directed by your prescriber. These medications target cancer cells and stop them from spreading.

Chemotherapy

Chemotherapy uses medications that are given by IV or taken by mouth. It is the main form of treatment for multiple myeloma.

Immunotherapy

Immunotherapy uses your own immune system to fight cancer by boosting or changing how the immune system works to attack cancer cells.

Medications

  • Cyclophosphamide (Cytoxan)
  • Lenalidomide (Revlimid®)
  • Pomalidomide (Pomalyst®)
  • Thalidomide (Thalomid)
