Parkinson's disease

How CenterWell Specialty Pharmacy® can help

Parkinson’s disease (PD) is a neuromuscular condition that causes involuntary, uncontrolled movements. With nearly 90,000 people diagnosed each year, it’s the second most common neurodegenerative disorder in the U.S. after Alzheimer’s disease.¹ Learn more about PD and what we can do to support you on the road ahead.

What is Parkinson’s disease?¹-³

PD is a chronic neurodegenerative disorder that affects the central nervous system, primarily motor function. It’s a degenerative disease, meaning that it progresses over time.

PD is characterized by tremors (rhythmic shaking of the body), muscle rigidity, impaired balance and loss of coordination.

PD is thought to be caused by the gradual lack of dopamine-producing neurons in the substantia nigra, a region of the midbrain. In people with PD, the brain doesn’t produce enough dopamine, which is necessary for smooth, purposeful motor function.

Men are more likely than women to develop the condition. Most people who get Parkinson’s are older than 65, although 10%–20% develop symptoms before age 50.

PD symptoms can be mild at first, but they tend to progress over time. The rate of the disease’s progression varies from patient to patient. In addition to tremors, rigidity, slowness of movement and impaired balance PD has non-motor symptoms, including:¹-²

  • Constipation
  • Depression and anxiety
  • Fatigue
  • Hallucinations and delusions
  • Impaired sense of smell or taste
  • Problems with attention and memory
  • Sleep disorders
  • Urinary disorders
  • Vision problems
  • Weight loss

There is no cure for PD, but a combination of treatment and medications are available to help manage symptoms. CenterWell Specialty Pharmacy offers medications to treat the motor and non-motor related symptoms of PD, as directed by your prescriber.
