Tardive dyskinesia

How CenterWell Specialty Pharmacy® can help

Tardive dyskinesia (TD) is a condition that causes involuntary movements that make it hard to do everyday activities. Living with TD can be challenging, but the good news is that treatments are available to manage—and even reverse—symptoms in some cases.¹

What is tardive dyskinesia?¹-²

TD is a disorder that causes uncontrollable movements of the face, neck, torso, arms and legs. These movements are often unpredictable and may include repetitive lip smacking, tongue thrusting or blinking. TD can also cause more complex movements, such as swaying, arm waving or facial grimacing.

TD is most often caused by taking neuroleptics—medications to treat mental health conditions—for a long time. Neuroleptics block dopamine receptors in the brain, which is the chemical that communicates messages between the nerve cells and the rest of the body.

TD isn’t life-threatening, but it can be disruptive. It can also make it difficult to do simple activities like eating and talking.

The earlier TD is diagnosed, the more likely it is that the symptoms can be reversed.

The severity of TD symptoms vary from patient to patient. Some people might have mild symptoms that are barely noticeable, while others might have a hard time performing everyday activities. It’s important to meet with your doctor to test for TD if you’re experiencing common symptoms such as:¹-²

  • Blinking rapidly
  • Chewing motions
  • Grimacing or frowning
  • Making sucking motions with the mouth
  • Smacking lips
  • Sticking out your tongue
  • Thrusting or rocking your pelvis
  • Twisting your large neck muscles

There is no cure for TD, but there are treatments to reduce the severity of involuntary movements and improve your ability to function in everyday life. CenterWell Specialty Pharmacy offers medications to treat TD, as directed by your prescriber.
