Important information about Zantac and medicines containing ranitidine

Based on recent information we’ve received from the U.S Food & Drug Administration, Zantac and medicines containing ranitidine are no longer available because they have been removed from the market. Unfortunately this means CenterWell Pharmacy® will not have stock of these medicines available.

This FDA withdrawal applies to all suppliers and all pharmacies nationwide and is not specific to CenterWell Pharmacy. For more details about this withdrawal, visit https://www.fda.gov/news-events/press-announcements/fda-requests-removal-all-ranitidine-products-zantac-market.

If you are currently taking any of these medicines, we know that this medicine is important to you. We will be sending your prescriber information about this so they are aware of the withdrawal, and request they send a new prescription for an alternative. We recommend that you talk to your prescriber about this. Also, if you do not want us to make outreach to your prescriber, or if you do not want to fill an alternative, please contact us at the number listed below.

CenterWell Pharmacy’s recommended alternatives include:

  • Omeprazole (Prilosec)
  • Pantoprazole (Protonix)

Medicine disposal recommendations

Most drugs can be thrown in the trash, but you should take certain precautions before tossing them out.

If your prescriber decides to send a new prescription to CenterWell Pharmacy, they can do so:

• Mix all liquids or pills with water or kitty litter, coffee grounds, vinegar, ashes, table salt, dirt, etc.

• Keep the medicine in the original bottle with the childproof cap on. Scratch out your information on the label.

• Put the bottle into another container that you can’t see through and that has a lid.

• Put into the normal trash (not recycling bin) on your garbage pick-up day, making sure that all containers are sealed.

*In all cases, be sure to remove all personal health information (name, address, Rx number, etc.) before disposal.
