During the holidays, you want to feel your best. But this time of year can usher in health challenges, from germs and sickness to feeling lonely or isolated. Below, you’ll find resources and steps you can take to boost your mental and physical health.

Prevent infection

There’s plenty to look forward to this holiday season! However, there is also a higher risk of infection from colds, viruses, the flu and more. You can strengthen your immune system by getting the flu vaccine, disinfecting commonly used surfaces, regularly washing your hands and carrying hand sanitizer when you’re on-the-go. And it’s helpful to avoid larger gatherings when possible, socially distance and keep away from people who may be sick or COVID-19 carriers.

Protect yourself against the flu and COVID-19

After months of taking precautions against COVID-19, the flu may have fallen off your radar. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) reminds us that the flu remains a health concern, especially for older adults.1 As you age, your immune defenses weaken. This may leave you more vulnerable to getting sick from the flu or viruses, both of which appear more often in the winter.

You can get a flu shot at most provider’s offices, clinics or nearby pharmacies. If you’re a Humana member, find an in-network doctor or pharmacy. And the vaccine may lessen the severity of COVID-19 if you catch it.2

If you have a Humana medical plan, you’re eligible for no-cost COVID-19 diagnostic tests through Humana’s COVID-19 Testing Program for Medicare Advantage and plans through an employer. Those with only Medicare Part D prescription drug plan coverage do not qualify for coverage of these tests.

Besides getting the flu shot, take action to help stay healthy now (and beyond):

  • Avoid people who are sick
  • Cover your mouth when you cough or sneeze
  • Wear a mask that covers your nose and mouth when outside your home
  • Don’t touch your eyes, nose or mouth
  • Wash your hands frequently
  • Keep 6 feet of distance between you and others not in your household

Brighten your holidays—and fight the cold-weather blues—by prioritizing your mental and physical health.

The options below are easy, and inexpensive or free. They can also reduce stress and anxiety, and provide structure during a hectic time.

Volunteer. Helping others helps you feel better. You can volunteer virtually.

Exercise. Take the stairs or a quick walk alone or with a friend or family member to lower stress levels.

Drink more water and less alcohol. Water will hydrate you and cleanse your system of many germs that can make you sick.

Connect virtually with friends or family. Even if unable to see them in person, you’ll reap the social benefits.

Get plenty of sleep.

Eat healthy foods to fuel your body.

If you have a minor health concern, telehealth (also called virtual visits) is another way you can stay safe. Get the healthcare support and prescriptions you need without the hassle or risk of traveling to see your healthcare provider.
